There was a time when THE business management software solution to have was SAP, a business management software suite out of Germany that took the big business world by storm. Hugely expensive to purchase, let alone implement and support, SAP nevertheless was the industry leader in what was called ERP software. The concept is that if all aspects of your business could be integrated, there would be less repetition of routine functions and transactions could be captured once instead of repeatedly. For example you would capture the order from the customer and produce an order confirmation, then someone would take that and produce a pick list to get the inventory from the warehouse for delivery. This would be handed to dispatch who would generate a delivery note and invoice, and so on. By integrating this transaction, the order could be captured once, the software would produce the pick list, which dispatch would check off prior to delivery, and the software would produce a delivery note and invoice. This has an obvious saving, not only in manpower, but also in accuracy and turn-around times, which in turn increases sales and profits.
However the cost of the system was so great that only the biggest firms could implement it. Smaller firms looked to software like QuickBooks to do their accounting for them. QuickBooks is a great product but is limited in what it can do, and is quite frightening for accountants who can spend hours trying to find where QuickBooks has allocated transactions with unintended consequences (like the business that ended the year with negative inventory!). And there are many other solutions that came along and made their niches in the market place, all with their own claim to fame.
With the advent of the Cloud, faster and better broadband internet and mobile communications, the software world has had to move on and develop again. Even the great SAP have had to change and have now completed a SAAS offering which is currently being advertised. QuickBooks has come out with an Online version that has received mixed reviews. Many new web based products have come out offering all many of solutions.
Most importantly though, is that this change has opened up the market to new players who have come up with new solutions. It is now possible to get a software solution, with full ERP functionality, available in the cloud and at a reasonable price. This is a good time to be looking into new software solutions to keep your business on the cutting edge.
